Time for The Governor General to Go, say Sydneysiders

A poll conducted on Monday and Tuesday evenings this week has revealed that 47% of people in Sydney think the Governor General should resign. More than a third of people did not know enough about the abuse claims, however amongst those who had a view on the matter, more that twice as many thought the Governor General should resign. Nearly half of the women surveyed said that Dr Hollingsworth should resign, and most people aged 40-54 years of age expressed the view that it was time for him to go.

How This Poll Was Conducted

This topic was included in the ongoing Australians Today research program conducted by Ingenuity Research. The survey was conducted by telephone amongst 300 people aged 18+ on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th February 2002. The 300 Respondents were selected randomly across Sydney from the electronic white pages. The interviews were conducted by trained interviewers according to standards set-out by Interviewer Quality Control Australia. A quality control validation was conducted across 10% of the interviews.

Respondents were asked:

Recently there have been reports that Dr Peter Hollingsworth, the Governor General, failed to act sufficiently with regards to sexual abuse by members of the clergy. Do you feel that Dr Hollingsworth should stay in office or resign over the matter?

Stay in office 1
Resign 2 (DO NOT READ OUT)
Don't know/ Don't care 3
